The widespread period of peace that fallowed the civil wars (1554), coincided with the rised of artists who had arrived from Spain and others parts of Europe. Beginning in the sixteenth painting took on Italian, Flemish and Spanish influences. In 1575, the italian painter Bernardo de Bitti, a member of Jesuit order, arrived in the Viceroyalty of Peru propagaiting his art and was enlisted to paint various churches in Lima and Cusco. At that time, art was primarily religious, serving mainly purposes catechization. It is for this reason that the first work imported from the Old World were brought over at the request of the religious orders. Later, well of families in Lima and others parts of Peru began seeking out novel artistic objects to complete their private collections.
